We planned to go to 3 Idiots and since we got the tickets only for the 9pm show, we decided to go out for a early dinner. We went to Karaikudi restaurant on Oak Tree Road at around 7pm and were surprised to find the entire restaurant empty.
This restaurant is relatively new and as I have seen many restaurants come up and disappear within three to six months, we were a bit worried if the quality of the food has gone so much that there is no one in the restaurant.
We were four of us and so ordered quite a few items.
Appetizers
Onion Pakoda: I am trying Onion Pakoda for the second time in less than ten days (tried the same dish at Anjappar also). Onion Pakoda in Karaikudi is made using the same batter that is used to do Bajji items. While the onion pakoda at Anjappar was a typical pakoda that we get in India also, the one here in Karaikudi tastes more like onion bajji – though different, it was tasting good.
Chicken 65: Though I did not eat it, I heard it was good – had the necessary flavours, but was missing the hot, spicy levels that we typically find in traditional Indian cuisine.
The quantity of both Pakoda and chicken 65 was quite huge and was more than expected.
Attul Kaal Soup (Goat Leg Soup): I heard this was good, but they could have avoided throwing the big lump of bone into the soup. May be a thin leg piece would have been much better than this lump of bone.
Main Course
Ceylon Egg Paratha: I had this as my main dish and was quite satisfied with the taste. So in both the dishes I had (pakoda and ceylon egg paratha), I had nothing to complain.
Plain Paratha and Naan were also quite good and they went well with the side dishes we ordered.
We ordered Butter Chicken Masala and Chettinad Chicken as side dishes and they were very well made, tasty as well as with the right flavours.
Chicken Briyani: Chicken Briyani was not as tasty as we expected it to be. It was just ok.
Around the time when we were ready to leave, we saw many other customers come in. It was good to see the restaurant get busy as the taste that we got in almost all the items we ordered definitely shows that the restaurant provides tasty food that satisfies the typical customer expecting the typical Karaikudi food.
